Bacteria existed before humans, and bacterial diseases always upgrade itself with human development. A lot of Bacterial diseases we see today existed from the beginning of the world, and some of it may have developed after them. For a long time we didn't know that diseases can be infectious, because infectious diseases existed and disappeared throughout history and some other disappeared to show up again. Some infectious diseases extinct because of humanities ability to face it.
What we know about infectious diseases killed our ancestors? Our knowledge of old diseases is low, but we know that Black Death and Plague were the most popular infectious diseases. Infectious diseases changed throughout time and place. And sometimes it didn't stop on geographical bounders, but it followed trading lines and it was able to kill tones of people in days and the results were terrible and the cure was too rare because of the lack of human knowledge.
We know that diseases killed the most famous guys in history. For example, its known that the big Alexander died from an inflammation in the lung and before him, his best friend hiphaston died by Typhoid.
And of course epidemic diseases are not something from the past. We still got new and old diseases to fight, but most popular killing diseases throughout history are no longer common, thanks to the vaccine against it.
In the past, people were warning each other that there were a new disease coming. Sometimes people ran out of their homes fearing death. But the fact that people escaped to different places was the biggest factor of the spread of disease. Now there are different kinds of cures especially against Bacterial Infectious diseases and we have a lot faster ways to communicate with each other. Even through traveling by sea helps diseases spread as fast as traveling by planes, but medical warnings spread a lot faster using internet and T.V.
